Participation in Tokyo University of Science IP Forum 2016

 On March 17, 2016, Chief Judge Ryuichi Shitara participated in the Tokyo University of Science IP Forum 2016 (The 3rd Tokyo University of Science MIP International IP Seminar.).
 In the forum, judges, lawyers, patent attorneys and other people from Japan, the U.S. and Germany explained the current status in each of their countries and exchanged opinions under the theme of “Patent Litigation Developments in Japan, U.S.A. and Europe – a change for NPE activities.”
 Chief Judge Shitara gave a keynote presentation titled “IP Litigation in Japan - SEPs and NPE Developments” to (1) introduce the case for which judgment was rendered by the Grand Panel of the IP High Court as to whether or not an injunction based on a standard-essential patent for which FRAND declaration has been made should be granted and as to a claim for damages, (2) introduce and explain the details of judgment rendered in respective countries with respect to the case concerning a standard-essential patent in the 5-country mock trials at the IP High Court 10th Anniversary Commemorative International Symposium, (3) give an explanation as to whether or not an injunction based on a standard-essential patent for which a FRAND declaration has not been made should be granted. Further, Chief Judge Shitara also participated in the program titled “Panel Discussion with Judges concerning NPE Litigation/Practice” together with Mr. Randall Rader, Former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and Prof. Dr. Peter Meier-Beck, Presiding Judge of the German Federal Court of Justice, and they engaged in a Q&A session and exchanged opinions on the presentation.
 A large audience attended the forum and eagerly audited the presentation. This showed that they have high interest in patent litigation in the respective countries.
