Visit by Foreign Students from Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS), Kobe University

On February 16, 2017, 15 people, including 12 foreign students from Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam who are in the doctoral course of GSICS, Kobe University, visited the IP High Court.
 
The visitors observed oral arguments in the afternoon and received an explanation on those proceedings and technical backgrounds from a judge before and after their observing. Further, the visitors were provided with an overview of the IP High Court by Chief Judge Misao Shimizu and detailed explanations on the judicial research officials system by a judicial research official at his office.
 
Finally, a round-table discussion was held with the attendance of the Second Division Presiding Judge Yoshiyuki Mori and one other judge, in which they engaged in an active Q&A session and exchanged views. The foreign students were deeply interested not only in IP-related litigation but also in the Japanese litigation system in general.


In addition, the foreign students visited the Tokyo District Court IP Division on the following day, February 17. They observed oral arguments and the proceedings using the TV-conference system. Then, they visited each room of the Tokyo District Court IP Division and finally, Presiding Judge Tamotsu Shoji of the Tokyo District Court Fortieth Civil Division and two other judges gave them a lecture about the Japanese patent litigation system and at a round-table discussion held later, they engaged in an active Q&A session and exchanged views.
 
The foreign students were deeply interested in the Japanese litigation system in general also at the Tokyo District Court IP Division just like the previous day.
