Visit by Participants in St. Gallen University’s Executive Master of European and International Business Law Program

On August 30, 2017, participants in the Tokyo Module of St. Gallen University’s Executive Master of European and International Business Law program visited the IP High Court. The group consisted of fifteen participants from nine countries around the world.
They received an explanation from Judge Motoyuki Nakashima about patent litigations at the IP High Court, with a focus on issues specific to this litigation, such as exclusive jurisdiction over patent lawsuits. Topics also included the Grand Panel System, the Judicial Research Officials System, the Technical Advisors System, details of technical explanatory sessions, the relationship between IP infringement suits and suits to seek rescission of JPO (Japan Patent Office) decisions, and the content transmitted through the IP High Court website. In response to those explanations, participants had an active question and answer session on various topics, including how judicial research officials get involved in court proceedings, how they provide explanations to judges and how they are different from appraiser.
