Participation in the 2016 International Conference on IP in Korea

On May 25, 2016, the 2016 International Conference on IP was held in Seoul, Korea. Chief Judge Ryuichi Shitara and Presiding Judge Makiko Takabe from the IP High Court participated in the conference.

The conference was hosted by the KIPO, and officers of the KIPO, USPTO, and JPO and judges who engage in IP cases participated as panelists from Korea, the United States and Japan. Sessions were held on themes “Operating Status of Patent Invalidation Trial System in Major Countries” and “Efficient Management Method of Concentration of Jurisdiction over Patent Litigation.” The panelists introduced the current status of IP litigations in their countries and exchanged opinions with other panelists. Many people who handle IP-related matters, such as judges, lawyers, patent attorneys and scholars in Korea, observed the sessions.

Prior to the conference, Chief Judge Shitara gave a keynote presentation titled “Harmonization and Cooperation of Patent Dispute Cases” and delivered a speech on the mechanism of the IP litigation system in Japan, means to gain expert knowledge, roles of the IP High Court and the JPO with respect to patent disputes, internationalization of patent disputes, international exchange of courts, and other issues.

In a session on “Efficient Management Method of Concentration of Jurisdiction over Patent Litigation,” Judge Takabe gave a speech titled “The measure to harmonize patent trial and litigation in Japan” on the transition of patent litigation systems in Japan, “dual-track” issues and solutions, and after that she exchanged opinions as a panelist in the session.
