On December 2 and 3, 2014, a seminar titled "Practice of Handling of IPR Court Cases in Indonesia" was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The seminar was hosted by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights (DGIRP), and Judge Misao Shimizu from the IP High Court participated as a lecturer. Examiners from the Directorate of Patent, Directorate of Copyright, Industrial Design, Lay-out Design of Integrated Circuit, and Trade Secret, and Directorate of Trademark, and professors from the University of Indonesia also gave lectures from their respective positions with regard to lawsuits relating to patents, industrial designs, and trademarks. A total 140 participants (consisting of 60 examiners and trial examiners from the DGIRP Directorates, two judges from the Supreme Court of Indonesia, 20 judges from district courts and the Commercial Court in Jakarta, as well as civil servant investigators, prosecutors, police officials and IP consultants) attended the lectures. As an introduction, Judge Shimizu talked about the IP litigation practice in Japan, and then he went into detail, focusing on topics such as how to determine the existence of an inventive step in patent cases and how to judge similarity in design and trademark cases, as well as cases on unfair use of designs and trademarks. The lecture materials had been translated into Indonesian, and simultaneous interpretation services were also available for the lectures and discussions, which enabled the participants to engage in a lively Q&A session. The participants showed keen interest in the IP litigation system and practice in Japan.
