On October 20, 2017, Judge Kathleen M. O’Malley of CAFC (the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit) and Judge Carsten Haase of the District Court of Dusseldorf visited the IP High Court. Following explanations from IP High Court judges about subjects such as the system of IP-related litigations in Japan and the structure of the IP High Court, Judge O’Malley and Judge Haase actively exchanged views with Chief Judge Shimizu and other IP High court judges. Topics discussed at this session included patent invalidity defense, judicial research officials, technical advisors, video conferences and the first-sale doctrine (doctrine of exhaustion).
