On July 20, 2017, trainees (twenty-two lawyers and other legal practitioners who deal with intellectual property rights from Brazil, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam) of the FY2017 JPO/IPR Training Course for IP Protection Lawyers visited the IP High Court. After observing oral hearings at the courtroom, they had active question and answer session with Judge Sanae Kataoka regarding trial procedures, etc. and toured the office of judicial research officials. Topics discussed in the session included management of court procedures, relationship between IP infringement lawsuits and suits against appeal/trial decisions made by the JPO (Japan Patent Office), and comparison of Japan’s court procedures and those of each participant’s home country.
