Visit by lecturers for JETRO European IP Seminars

On November 6, 2018, Mr. Alan Johnson (lawyer from the UK and former chairman of the European Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court (UPC) System Standing Committee) and Mr. Jochen Bühling (lawyer from Germany and President of the International Association for Protection of Intellectual Property Germany), who were invited as lecturers at the European IP seminar organized by JETRO, and three JETRO staff visited the IP High Court. After greetings from Chief Judge Makiko Takabe and both lawyers, Chief Judge Takabe explained about an overview of the IP lawsuit system in Japan, system and the practice of conducting proceedings based on expert knowledge, as well as the IP High Court’s efforts pertaining to internationalization and dissemination of information, among other topics. The two lawyers explained about the situation in the UK and Germany for establishing the UPC and details of judgments relating to standard essential patents in Germany. Both lawyers as well as Chief Judge Takabe enjoyed valuable discussion on these topics, which continued beyond the scheduled time.
