Visit by Participants of Nagoya University’s CALE Summer Seminar

On August 28, 2017, participants (twenty-six college students from Cambodia, Laos, Mongol, Uzbekistan and Vietnam) in the summer seminar held by the Research and Education Center for Japanese Law of CALE of Nagoya University visited the IP High Court.
After explanations given by Presiding Judge Makiko Takabe and Judge Sumiko Sekine on the outline of intellectual property litigation in Japan, an active question and answer session was held on a wide variety of topics, including distinctive features of intellectual property litigation compared to other civil litigation, how judges acquire expert knowledge, decision criteria for trademark similarities, determination of whether parallel importation infringes trademark right or not, and how to detect illegal uploads of videos. They then toured the court building and court rooms, receiving an explanation from a judicial research official on the role of judicial research officials in intellectual property litigation.
